Symmetry

Symmetry is the line which divides a shape or an object into equal parts. First we saw a video explaining what symmetry is. Then using the IWB we investigated the lines of symmetry of some shapes. We  played a game where half of the word was covered and the children had to guess which word it was. And then finally it was time for some on-line games and some cut and paste activity. Below are the links for the games and photos showing hte children busy in action.

Sport Activities

One fine day we had an unusual PE lesson. Children were grouped and were asked to think of games with the different equipment they find in a particular station. They came with really good ideas. Here is a Photostory of our day.

Food Chains

In this week's Science lesson we explored different food chains in different habitats. We saw a video about different food chains and how these help us transfer energy through food. We said that there are the producers (grass, plants, wheat), herbivores (the animals and insects which eat grass), carnivores (the animals which eat other smaller animals) and the omnivores (the animals which eat both grass and other smaller animals). Then we worked out a worksheet and played different games to further explore how these food chains function. Then after completing the food chains some children had to orally explain what is happening. Here are some videos of their excellent work.

Oliver Musical

Hey dearest children,

I've uploaded the videos of the 2 songs which we will be singing on our Merit Day celebration. Start practicing to do a wonderful job on the day. I'm sure you'll make me and your parents proud.

Advert writing

In this week's Maltese lesson, children had a go at writing an advert. After watching real adverts, we held a discussion with regards to the main points an advert focuses about; short, clear and descriptive sentences which allows the reader to picture it in his mind and most importantly contact information. Here are some shots of our work, well done to all :-)

The Solar System

In today's Science lesson we tackled the solar system. We listened to some songs to become familiar with the planets' names'. Then we saw a video, followed a number of games where more information was given. We now know the names of the 9 planets in our solar system, the order as regards the distace from the sun, that the sun is a star and that our planet Earth takes a year to orbit the sun. We know that our galaxy is called the Milky Way. Here are the links to some more fun facts about space.

This week's English lesson  was about the plurals.
Remember that to some words we add:

s = boy - boys
es = fox - foxes, dish - dishes, church - churches, glass - glasses
ies = lady - ladies
ves = shelf - shelves

Others called irregulars do not follow one of the patterns above. They might change completely or remain just the same.

Healthy Lifestyles

This week we had several initiatives at school encouraging healthy lifestyles. Us at Year 3 visited the President's Kithchen Garden. There we learned about the goodness of eating fresh, local produce. We learned about the importance of having more trees and plants in our environment to have more clean and fresh air. Then we had a stroll at San Anton Gardens and children were made aware that spending free time surrounded by greenery and peacefulness is healthier than staying closed at home in front of the TV or playing with the playstation.

At school children were also given the opportunity to play traditional games. These games help children stay active and enjoy the outdoors. I must say that they were enthusiastic and enjoyed all of the games most especially the 'bocci' and 'zibeg'. Here are some photos :-)

Water Conservation Posters

As part of the EkoSkola campaign each year group was given a task related to eco-friendly measures. The Year 3 group was assigned the task of drawing up a poster which illustrated water safety measures. After a class discussion, the children were grouped and each group decided on which measure their poster will focus on. This was done to avoid having all groups doing the same thing. Here are some photos of our work. Well done to all the children. They really worked hard and achieved great results.

Capacity

We learnt that capacity is the amount of liquid a container can hold. We learnt that 1litre is equal to 1000ml and also explored which containers hold less and which hold more than a litre. Besides, we also marked different amounts on our interactive container and practiced reading the amounts each container had using the i-learn maths program. Here are some pictures of our activities.

Weight

In the topic of weight we explored which objects are heavier or lighter than 1kg by actually weighing them on the scale. Then we did some exercises on the the interactive whiteboard using the i-learn maths program; we sorted which objects are heavier and which are lighter than 1kg. We also used the interactive weights to make up different amounts on the scale. Here are some photos of our activities.
